A Couple of new Layer Cakes at Sleeping Bear Crafts

I was supposed to be in Polegate today giving a Jelly Roll Quilt workshop to the Polegate Quilters.
But the snow is back; it's fine here in Burgess Hill but they've had a couple of inches in the Eastbourne Area so we've postponed the class.

Alistair and I can now spend some time working on my New Website - Janet Cooper Quilts.
This extra Website is just going to be for information on Patchwork and Quilting.
Eventually there will be lots of free patterns and guides available so that it will be a good place for beginners to learn the basics.
It's obviously under construction at the moment, but take a look and see what you think, any suggestions for subjects for me to feature will be gratefully received.

Charm Pack and Two New Layer Cakes, just in...

At the moment I have the Boutique Layer Cake and the Old Primrose Inn Charm Pack.

Also I now have the Vine Creek Layer Cake to go with the existing fabrics I have in the Vine Creek Range.

I will soon be getting in some fabrics from the Boutique range.
Primrose Inn is by Blackbird Designs and has soft heritage colours with lots of small prints, dots, checks and a few flowers.
Boutique is
by Chez Moi and has modern floral designs in pink, blue, green and amber.

Website Browsing Tips

  • Here's a tip for anyone who prefers to turn off all the fancy layouts and graphics on websites.
This works for both Internet Explorer and Firefox Browsers, although Firefox is better as it remembers this setting for the whole website not just the current page being viewed.

From the Menu Bar at the top select View...
Page Style... No Style Then you will see the webpage in it's simplest form with just text and images.
Some features may not work properly in this mode, but it can be useful if you are finding it difficult to read the page.
To revert to normal, simply select View.. Page Style... Basic Page Style.

New Fabrics looking forward to Summer

Well that's the Ardingly Show been and gone. A big thank you to all of you who visited us at the show.
At least it didn't snow this year when we were packing up.

New Fabrics, just in...

Three new ranges all by Makower UK, Seaside, Farmyard Corner and Country Kitchen.

Seaside - in the same style as their previous Beside the Sea range, really bright and full of the icons of the British seaside holiday. I have the picture squares (labels), border and three other fabrics in the range.

Farmyard Corner - a lovely new children's range complete with a large panel, border, picture squares (labels) and other co-coordinating fabrics.

Country Kitchen - I just have the picture squares (labels) and two co-coordinating spots fabrics from this range.

Workshops

I have added a number of new workshop dates to the section at the foot of this email.

On Our Website
...

A few of you have mentioned that you find some of the pictures on our new Website a little too small.
Maybe I could try and explain one of the features of the new Website...
(Oh BTW This feature will not work if you have scripts disabled in your browser settings,
you will see the detailed images on the product details page below the product details, as per our old Website)

When you select a product as below..

Select Product...

You then will go to the product details page...

Product details

Then, when you put move the mouse ponter over any of the thumbnails, as shown above...

medium sized Detailed image

That detailed image is then shown larger in the area above it.

NOW!, if you want to see a really BIG image, just (single) click on the thumbnail
or the small "View detail images(1)" link above the thumbnails, and you should get a popup window appear...

popup windo with detailed image

This window should almost fill your browser window.

When there are multiple detail images there will be thumbnails above this large image,
click on any of them to view other detailed images.

multiple detailed images popup window

To close the popup window use the "Close" link in the top right corner.
(or you can use the Ctrl-F4 keys)

Website Browsing Tips

  • One of the under-used but fundamental features of nearly all software are the Copy and Paste commands.
This can help make the entering of complicated or long text a doddle.
    One example where this can help is with our Gift Certificate codes;
For security reasons they are computer generated and intentionally not memorable and therefore they are not that easy to enter at the checkout.

In most applications, browsers, emails, documents etc. where you see text, you can double click on a word and it will be highlighted.
Then you can either right-mouse-click on the highlighted word and select copy from the menu or use the Ctrl and C keys (usually referred to as Ctrl-C) to copy the text.
Then go and click in the input field you are filling in (to get the cursor showing in the field) and either Ctrl-V or right-mouse-click and select paste and the copied text should appear.

Another way to highlight text before copying is to click and hold down the left-mouse-button and then drag the mouse cursor along the word or phrase you want.
Then release the button and copy with Ctrl-C or right-mouse-click and select Copy.

Ardingly Quilt Show - This Weekend

First off apologies! We do apologise for the "Click on Previous" email you might have received just before the last newsletter, Alistair pressed the wrong button; he is getting on a bit you know!

I am sorry that I haven't much in the way of quilting news this week, getting ready for Ardingly Show is taking up most of my time.
But I promise next newsletter I should have some new products and details of some new up and coming workshops.
Also I hope to announce my new "Block of the Month" by post or email/download.

Our Website...

Alistair's been at it again! You may notice a couple of new features on our website.

There is now an "A-Z" on the purple tab bar. This will take you to an Alphabetical list of all our products, just select the letter you want and you can search our product list.

Next to the new A-Z tab, is another new feature "Books". We don't sell books ourselves, but this will show links to Books that I use and can recommend. They can be bought direct from Amazon.co.uk and you can use the links on our page to go straight to the book on Amazon's site.

Ardingly Show...

This weekend, Fri 29th to Sun 31st, we'll be at the South of England Showground in Ardingly, for The Spring Quilt Show. Wrap up warm! The forecast is decidedly chilly, it did snow last year on the Sunday.

Website Browsing Tips

  • You may not know that 99% of websites have a link back to the home page when you click on the site's logo (usually top left). So on our site the quickest way to get to our Home Page is to click on the picture of the Bear.
  • It can be annoying when clicking on a link you are taken away from the website that you are browsing. One option is to right-mouse-click on the link and you should get a menu with the option to "Open Link in New Window" or with the latest versions of most browsers, "Open in New Tab". This will let you view the link in a new window or tab. You can use this technique to view multiple pages of our website at the same time, without going back and forth.

Snow and those UFOs

Well I don't know about you, but I have just about got fed up with the snow.
Pretty as it is, it has caused me to cancel too many Stitch & Chats and Workshops, sorry everyone!.

The one good thing is that I have managed to do some "catching up" and finish off a few of my UFOs.
I hope you have too; if so, please send me some photos for the gallery, I have added some photos of my now FO's.

At least the deliveries have started to get through, so we are getting our Notions stock back to normal.

I have updated the upcoming workshop list below.

Our NEW Website.

Thank you to everyone for their compliments on our new website.
Alistair has made a few tweaks, like increasing the font sizes etc., due to the very constructive comments we have received,
thanks again for those.

New BLOG - I have started a Blog, so if you are interested in what's going on behind the scenes here, take a look at MY BLOG.

Website Browsing Tip - If you do have a problem with small text on any website...
In your browser (e.g. Firefox or Explorer) try holding the Ctrl Key and pressing the + key,
each time you do this it should zoom in and make the whole site appear larger.
Likewise Ctrl and - keys will make it smaller, Ctrl and 0 (zero) will return to the "normal view" setting.

New Year - New Website - New Fabrics - New VAT?

Happy New Year Everyone.
I hope you had a great Christmas and got all the Quilting goodies you wished for.
Alistair & I had a quiet Christmas over indulging, as you do!!.

First off, the VAT increase.
Don't worry about rushing to buy before the VAT goes up from 15% to 17½%.
Our prices are going to remain as they are; we will pay the extra 2
½% VAT.

A few new Children's Fabrics.
I have four fabrics from Clothworks - "Baby Buggies".
A bright and cheerful fabric in Pink, Blue & Green with cartoon style "Bugs", butterflies, caterpillars, ladybirds etc.

Our NEW Website.
Some of you may have noticed that our new Website is already up and running.
Luckily the upgrade seems to have all gone well and without many hiccups (fingers crossed).
Do let us know if you have any problems using the new site.
Below is a quick guide to some of the changes.

New Look - The site now has a dark background to help display the fabrics more clearly
and make the text easier to read.

The "Categories" menu on the left, now has "Fly-out" sub-menus, to help you find the products you want more quickly...

Flyout Menus

So if a category(e.g. Fabric) has "sub-categories" when you hover on the menu item,
the sub menu will open for it to the right and so on as above, just click on the category you want.
Alternatively if you click on "Fabric" you will go to a page with the sub categories listed at the top, as before.

Another new feature at the top right of the page...

The Login/Register/Checkout functions are all here.
A new feature is the mini-cart, when you add items to your cart a summary appears here.
Click on the Shopping Cart icon and you will see details of the items...

You can change the quantity, delete items or go to the checkout from here.
With this new cart, when adding items to your cart you will not be taken to the "old style"
cart page each time but remain on the product page, the "Buy Button" will briefly change to say "Added"
so you know you have added the product to the cart.

The detailed images for products can now be viewed at the top of the product pages...

When you hover the mouse pointer over a detail image it is shown above in a larger form.
If you click on any of the detailed images you will get a popup window showing them in their full size,
close the popup window to get back to the details page.

If you have any questions or comments please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Happy Christmas from Sleeping Bear Crafts

I would just like to say a big THANK YOU for making 2009 a very good year for Alistair & I, here at Sleeping Bear Crafts.
It's been so busy that we've not got around to doing all the things we wanted to do.
We've been a bit held up on the DVD production front and also getting my "Monthly" workshops available by mail.
But I promise that we'll get right on to them in the New Year.

Our NEW Website for the NEW YEAR.
As I've already mentioned, our website will be unavailable for a few days over the Christmas period.
It will be Closed from Wednesday 23rd December and (fingers crossed) reopened with it's new look on New Year's Day.

Happy Christmas and Happy Quilting in 2010

Oh Yes - more fabric has arrived!

As soon as I had sent out last week's newsletter, more parcels arrived:
a couple of extra fabrics to go along with Moda's Aster Manor collection;
and a few bolts from Makower, including some new picture squares
and parts of the Boutique and the Buttercup Farm collections.

As usual, you can also see all the new fabrics in our "Latest Fabrics" Section.

Web-site changes
We are planning a new look for the web-site in the New Year.
We would appreciate your input to making these improvements,
so please let us know if there is any information that you think is missing from our site
or things that are difficult to find and we will endeavour to make life easier for you.

The site may be unavailable for a few days over Christmas but we hope you will like the new look.
The basic functions and structure will remain the same, so as not to confuse you all!

And finally, if you can think far enough ahead to what you want to do in the New Year,
then check out my list of workshops at the bottom of the page.
This list has changed slightly since last week - a couple of the dates have been swapped around
and some of them are getting booked up already, so don't leave it too late!

I will be repeating many of the popular workshops throughout the year, so if you are interested
in any of the following then just email to let me know which day of the week you can or can't do
and I will try to plan accordingly:

  • Charm Square Quilts
  • Kaleidoscope Quilt
  • Cathedral Window
  • Seminole Patchwork
  • Tessellated Quilts
  • Workshop Bag

Lots of new Fabrics in Store
With the long Winter evenings upon us - and the kind of weather that makes you want to stay indoors -
it's time to sit and sew - so luckily I have quite a few new fabrics just in.
This time they're from Moda, Andover, Maywood Studios and P&B Textiles
You can see them on the first two pages of our "Latest Fabrics" Section
or check out the ranges using the links below.

More Itsy Bits - Six additional fabrics from Andover's new range with soft, earthy colours and tiny motifs.

Ramblings - A new manufacturer for us, P&B Textiles, with a range of six cream and ivory neutrals.

Solitaire Softs - From Maywood Studios, eight pastel fabrics, with star / sprig motifs.

Essence - From Moda, designed by Sandy Gervais.
We have the Panel, Jelly Roll, Charm Pack and two other co-ordinating fabrics.
Also from Moda, we have the Charm Pack from the Birdie range and the Aster Manor Jelly Roll.

If you're stuck for ideas for projects using these fabrics or previous collections such as Gobble Gobble and Vine Creek,
then check out the free patterns on Moda's web-site or at the Moda Bake Shop.

And with Christmas rapidly approaching, don't forget to browse through our web-site for present ideas for your quilting friends
or for things to put on your own Christmas 'Wish List' and then pass the details on to your nearest and dearest.

Latest Free Video Short at Sleeping Bear
First a BIG Thank You to everyone who came along to the Sale on Saturday.
I had a great time and from the feedback so did many of you.
A special thank you to Joy, Pat, Sally & Kathryn for all their help.
We managed to raise £30 from the teas & coffees for
Chailey Heritage School.

We have just uploaded our latest FREE Video Short to the website.
This shows how to use the Clover Desk Needle Threader and the Colonial ThimblePads.
Two products which make great Christmas presents.
I must apologise for the "croaky" voice-over, we'll redo it as soon as I can shake off this annoying cold.

New Photo Gallery at Sleeping Bear Crafts
One of the common requests we have had is for a customers' photo gallery.
So Alistair has set up a photo gallery using Flickr, it's not quite as he would like it but he wanted to get something up and working sooner rather than later.
When he can find a better way of doing it, he'll implement that.

Click here to see our Photo Gallery

Hover the mouse over the small photos to show the picture title, click on it to see it full size on Flickr and even leave comments.
You can also hover over the top or bottom of slide show, further down the page, to control it or click on the image showing to view it's details
.

We don't have masses of photos yet but we are hoping that you will email us your Photographs of any projects that you have made using Sleeping Bear Crafts Patterns, Kits or at our Workshops.
We will then upload them to the gallery.
N.B. These photographs will NOT be used for any other purpose without your permission.

Three New Jelly Rolls
Another short newsletter this week.
This is getting to be a bit of a habit, but in my defense it's because we took a couple of days off to celebrate my birthday.
On Monday Alistair and I visited Rye (just  down the coast) and came back with some lovely Sea Bream,
Alistair baked it on a bed of rosemary and garlic potatoes
, which was delicious.

Which reminds me, let me know one way or the other, if you are finding the "What to cook tonight" section at the foot of our home page of any use?

Yesterday, we visited Standen House near East Grindstead to see all the lovely William Morris textiles and wallpaper.
They had an amazing embroidered bedspread from the 1890s, the colours were still very vibrant over 100 years later.

Back to Quilting... I have just had a delivery from Moda...
Three new Jelly rolls, you can see them at the top of our website home page

Dozens of NEW Fabrics in at Sleeping Bear Crafts
It's been like Christmas here! Huge parcels of fabric have been arriving almost every day!
Poor old Alistair has been locked in the office for days, putting them all up on the website.

You can see them all on our "LATEST FABRICS"
pages, they take up the whole of the first two & half pages.

We have found some new wider continental fabrics from Hemmers Itex in Germany.
The fabrics I have from them so far are a range which I've called "Playful Teddies" .
This range is great for small children and the colours are really vibrant (the website images don't do them full credit).
The bolt width is 54" (137 cm) so you get over 20% extra fabric area for your money.
This means that Fat Quarters of these fabrics measure 27" x 19.5" (normal FQs are 22" x 19.5").
We are selling these 100% cotton fabrics at just £8 per metre which, I hope you agree, is really good value.

New from Makower I have  "Quilters' Palette" a range of co-ordinates in muted earthy colours.
I have five fabrics so far with more on order.

New from Classic Cottons I have ALL of the "Aquarius" range of fabrics.
This is their new fashionable Turquoise, Lime & Chocolate collection.

There are three new Batiks in, you can see these at the top of the first page of
"LATEST FABRICS".

For all you picture square fanatics, I have one new set in... "Farm Animals Labels".

I have SIX additional Black & White fabrics.
They are at the end of page 2 and the top page 3 of the "LATEST FABRICS"
